Askernish (South Uist)
South Uist - Askernish

A natural links laid out by Old Tom Morris in 1891 across the dunes and machair of South Uist, rediscovered in 2005 and restored to his original eighteen-hole routing — often described as the most natural golf course in the world.
Old Tom Morris routed eighteen holes across the dunes of Askernish Farm in 1891 at the landowners' request. The course declined after the farm passed into crofting tenure in 1922; a 12-hole layout appeared near the island's landing strip in the 1930s and a nine-hole course was adopted in 1970. In 2005 consultant Gordon Irvine visited and called the land 'the holy grail'; with architect Martin Ebert he retraced Old Tom's routing and the restored course opened in August 2008. In 2022 the 13th was moved to a probable original Old Tom green site and the 6th and 17th greens were re-sited.
